Public Works Department Responsibilities:
Roads and Bridges
- Responsible for Construction and Maintenance on 350 miles of County Roads, over 200 miles of which are paved
- Construction (usually reconstruction or resurfacing) – Prepare Plans & Specifications for work; prepare and manage construction contracts; inspect work of contractors and perform quality control tests
- Maintenance – Snow Removal; mowing & weed control; blading gravel roads; sealing, patching, and crack filling of paved roads; and sign maintenance and replacement (including 911 Addressing Signs)
- Responsible for inspection of 200 bridges/large culverts under county and township roads. Recommend replacement or rehab when needed.
- Responsible for approving permits for all work by others in County highway right-of-way
- Responsible for approving oversize and overweight loads on County Roads
Ditches and Tile Systems
- Responsible for inspection and making recommendations for maintenance and repair of County Ditches and County Tile Systems. 36,000 benefited acres, which is approx. 13% of county surface area
Parks and Other County Facilities
- Responsible for maintenance/improvements of four County Parks and County Fairgrounds
- Involved in major remodeling activities at county buildings
- Responsible for maintenance, repair, and replacement of most county vehicles
Transit
- Responsible for Operation and Maintenance of TMT (Take Me There) Bus Service. $2.25 will get you anywhere in the county.
Solid Waste
- Manage programs and enforce ordinances pertaining to proper solid waste disposal
- Conduct Household Hazardous Waste collections (twice annually - May and September) and other recycling programs.
